Cassie threw her leg over the side of Hero’s motorcycle and pulled her helmet off, the rush of exhilaration gliding through her like a stone skipping over water. In fear, she’d clung to Hero tighter than she would care to admit, but she loved the way her hair drifted in the wind, even if her heart still pumped at the speed.

Titus, Lukas, Elijah, and Nyssa jumped out of the red Jeep.

“Let’s go kill a demon,” Cassie said, her voice wavering as her feet itched with anticipation. The summer heat shimmered around her, and sweat dripped from her forehead as she ran a hand through her wind-matted hair. This is it. My first mission. She had to admit that she loved the way it sounded, and how her newly toned muscles pulsated. She was really one of them.

Hero chuckled, whipping out his phone from his pocket. “We like to think of it like a game. Whoever kills the most each month wins. It should be just around this corner,” he said, glancing at the map on his screen. Cassie peered over his arm, seeing a singular red dot blinking in the alleyway up and to their right.

Her gaze then caught on the street ahead of her. Oak Street. Creole buildings surrounded them as college kids roamed around, heading in and out of cafes, restaurants, and bars. In another life, she would have been one of them. Perhaps she’d be in one of those metal chairs, drinking coffee and reading a book. But that wasn’t her life anymore. Now, she was here to fight demons. It seemed crazy how much her life had changed in such a short time.

“Nervous?” Nyssa asked, walking beside her.

Yes. Cassie shook her head, ignoring the thunderstorm brewing in her stomach. “How could I be when I have you guys?”

Lukas smiled at her. “Just keep your shields up, and you’ll be fine.”

Cassie nodded back at him.

“It’s probably a newbie demon anyway.” Elijah grinned. “Perfect for your first mission.”

Titus merely huffed.

Frantic beeping sounded from Hero’s phone, more red dots pinging all down the alleyway. Shaking her nerves off, Cassie followed the others as they rushed around the corner, their conversation over in seconds.

Her mouth went dry at the sight of dozens of demons slithering over the walls, hissing at them. The rest of the team armed themselves as Cassie watched with her mouth agape.

Cassie’s hands flung to her daggers, her heart pounding in her chest. This was way more than she was ready for.

Hero clearly thought the same. “Cassie. Run. Now,” he demanded, whipping out his own sword, his now golden eyes never leaving the demons.

Cassie’s feet stayed planted as one of the creatures flung itself at Nyssa. Nyssa spun around, her katana slicing its scaly form in half. Another went for Lukas, screeching in his face, but Lukas killed it easily, his sword sliding into the demon’s abdomen like it was butter.

Cassie felt as though the cement had swallowed her whole. But she held the daggers the way Hero had taught her to and waited.
